MSC Malaysia – ICON
What is ICON?
Introducing the Integrated Content Development (ICON) initiatives under the stewardship of the MSC Malaysia’s Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) for private sector and Malaysia Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) for public sector. ICON is the brainchild of our Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak, who envisioned integrated development approach for online content that can spur demand and eventually increase broadband usage in the country.
ICON is part of the National Broadband Initiatives and its Taskforce is chaired by the Chief Secretary to the Government, with a joint Secretariat from MDeC and MAMPU. The ICON Taskforce reports directly to the Cabinet Committee on Broadband.
ICON strategy? is designed to help enrich Malaysians by encouraging online content creation. The idea behind ICON is to accelerate the supply of local online content, thus promoting the broadband uptake. This in turn will increase opportunities for entrepreneurs and create more jobs for Malaysians in order to drive Malaysia into the K-economy.
Vision
To help generate wealth for Malaysians through ICT – We believe that ICT has a major role to play in many areas, such as wealth creation and human capital development.
Creating jobs and empowering talents – Through ICON, MSC Malaysia will drive job creation, training opportunities, development of creative and outsourcing services industries.
In parallel with the National Broadband Initiatives – ICON will complement the High Speed Broadband (HSBB) and Broadband to the General Population (BBGP) efforts by encouraging the creation of compelling local online content. This will help attract foreign investment in the form of large ICT companies, setting up base in MSC Malaysia, providing thousands of high-value jobs for Malaysians in the field of ICT.
Mission
To encourage demand for online content and development of the broadband. In order to achieve this, ICON is meant to encourage content owners to put up their valuable content online to excite the public and spur their broadband demand.
To develop local social and community applications to spur online demand and Internet usage via networking strategy. Such applications will not only spur demand for speed, content and more applications but also develop local community via networking.
Why?
The reason why ICON came into being is simple enough – to create more opportunities for Malaysians and to enrich Malaysians. Opportunities for generating wealth is greater through adoption of ICT, as it provides a level playing field in a borderless world. ICON programmes were designed to leverage on this fact.
In addition, the creation of sustainable intellectual property will allow Malaysians to capitalise on its long shelf life to generate wealth not only in the form of monetary rewards but also better standard of living, jobs creation and the creation of upstream and downstream economic activities.
Content development has been identified by the Malaysian Government as one of the key economic drivers to spur Malaysia into the K-economy. The products and quality creative content created under ICON will also help increase broadband penetration.
It has also been identified by the Malaysian Government that sustainable and integrated content development is a natural progression to drive demand for broadband in tandem with the HSBB and BBGP programmes.
